Special Edition Saturday: Blogger Frustration And Internet Options

While I am considering my Google/Blogger options, I will point you to some internet fun (and by the way, Google has messed up YouTube at the same time they have messed up Blogger.  Bad, Google!   Just because Google+ is a miserable failure, you don't have to take it out on YouTube....Grow up.)

Dear Readers, I encourage you to spend some time on Ancestry.com this weekend.  Start climbing your family tree....It's a lot of fun.  You know that we Preppies are into our lineage!!!

I am excited to announce that Ancestry has made
The Classic Preppy one of their Ancestry Aces.  That means I will be able to keep you updated on the latest news, especially about the 1940 Census, which the government will open on April 2nd.  Here's the latest:

The National Archives and Records Administration will open the 1940 U.S. Federal Census on April 2, 2012—the first time this collection will be made available to the public. Once we receive the census, we will begin uploading census images to our site so the public can browse them. Initially, this collection will be what we call a browse-only collection. This means a person can scroll through the pages of the census districts much like you would look at a microfilm or a book. At the same time, we will be working behind the scenes to create an index of the census that will eventually allow people to search for their family members by name as they currently can with all other censuses on Ancestry.com. Note also that the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be accessible free of charge throughout 2012 on Ancestry.com.
Dear Google,

I was going to write about the second year of  The Classic Preppy on Blogger.  Then I received your notification of changing how Blogger worked/displayed and that I could be one of the first to try it.

I. Do. Not. Like. It.

I am going to have to consider my options and will be back in touch with you soon.  Maybe I can get used to it.  Perhaps Word Press is calling my name....

Hmmmm......

To My Readers.....More later, everyone!  Have a great weekend..... Cheers, Liz

Monday Musings: Family (Genealogy)

Hi! My name is Liz and I am a Genealogy-aholic.

Preppies love family. Most of us can recite our ancestors at least a few generations back, and many of us spend our "down time" researching to find out more. I have been interested in genealogy since I was a young adult, and was blessed to have inherited the wonderful work my great-aunt had done (starting in the 1930's, when it was a real challenge). I am a huge fan of Family Tree Maker, my database of choice, and just as big of fan of their companion site Ancestry.com.  And I have to admit....I am one of those people who knows exactly how much time is left before the 1940 US Census documents are released (7 days!!).  I am a genealogy nerd.  I admit it.

What about you?  Do you enjoy researching your family, going through old photos, asking questions of your "older" family members?  It's a lot of fun...and you can get hooked easily.  Be warned!

One thing I am very grateful for is that I am living in the day and age of technology and online research/collaboration.  Think about all that we can do at the click of an icon....things that used to take forever.

Just to make your Monday a happy one, I have added this adorable video of what technology might have done for our founding fathers back in the day..... Enjoy!

Friday Find: The Light Of Day

The tagline "Capturing the Light of Dawn" couldn't be more appropriate!  I was honored to have had a sneak peek at Tiffany's new Rubedo metal.  It is exquisite!!  What a perfect choice for celebrating their 175th anniversay....

Thursday Thoughts: Touched By A Cause

I was invited to breakfast this morning.  I am not a morning person by nature, nor any other means, so I don't usually accept many breakfast invitations....but this one was different.  A friend of mine is on the board of directors of the Richmond/Central Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.  My grandmother, who lived to 101, spent the last three years of her life with that dread disease.  Although she was blessed to only have it that brief period of time during her very long life, it was so hard for all of us.

The people I heard speak today and the people I met, were simply inspiring.  I am very impressed with this organization and what they do.....and all across this country there is a concerted effort to move the funding for disease prevention/cure forward.  If you are interested, here is a link to more about this effort.  No contribution necessary....just a petition to sign.

This is the video from last year's breakfast...

Diseases like this know no boundaries. "Preppies" and "Non-Preppies" alike are affected.....

The Classic Preppy Returns (And So Does Downton Abbey!)

Sorry to have been away so long....our vacation was wonderful, with the exception of the motherboard of my laptop deciding to have problems.  So, off it went to Dell (and off I went to look at Mac Books)....

It should be back today, and I am planning all kinds of wonderful things to write in the future.  I can't believe this blog will celebrate its second birthday on the 29th of this month!

So, to offer you something VERY special to make up for my absence.....this is a Downton Abbey inspired post.  Every year the BBC does a wonderful Comedy Relief benefit.  This year's included a tremendous "take-off" on our own Downtown Abbey.  It is priceless.... Watch closely and you will see all kinds of familiar faces (Kim Cattrall from Sex and the City, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley from Absolutely Fabulous, and lots of other faces from movies such as Bridget Jones' Diary, Four Weddings and a Funeral, etc.)

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Liz

PS. I was delighted to see one of my favorite BBC reality stars at the end of Part 2. Her name is Kim Woodburn, and she and Aggie MacKenzie starred in a BBC hit show called How Clean Is Your House.  They would go into the most incredible hoards/messes and transform them.  To see her in action click here.  Warning: It's a pretty awful mess.

Funny Friday

This is how we partied in 1965!

I am not going to wear a crown today.....unless I find one at Tiffany's!

Quick update: No crown to be found, but did find a lovely little pink opal egg charm (far left) to complete my collection. DH had given me a Tiffany gift card this morning, and I had saved my "egg money" to complete the purchase. Wanted to save its aquisition for my big day! (I say "complete my collection" because the only one I am missing is all diamonds and is waaaaay out of my price range.  So my collection stops here unless I find a lucky lottery ticket!)

Mani-pedi, trip to Tiffany's, a new haircut and makeover at the Dior counter.  I am ready to face.....gulp!.....53.  Bring it on!!

See you next week!!  (We're going to Palm Beach.....and there's a lot going on this season...)

Thursday Thoughts: A Preppy Pregnancy

Those days are way behind me....and I can't say that the 90's were the best decade for maternity chic....but I was intrigued by People's photo spread of Jennifer Garner Affleck's "Preppy-Chic" maternity wear.

Check out the photos by clicking here.  Some outfits are preppier than others....but she does look elegant and appropriate.  (No 5" heels!!!)

Congratulations to the Afflecks on the arrival of their new son, Samuel Garner Affleck!
