New Year's Resolutions

Love, love, LOVE this article from New York Social Diary. Great basic rules for adding order to an oh-so-elegant life.....and some terrific vintage photos, too!  Check out Reggie Darling's blog for more!

VERY "Classic Preppy!"

Photo collage from NewYorkSocialDiary.com
Miss Betty would have loved his post, Drapes is a Verb.  Quite awhile ago, I wrote a post on this same thing (although not beautifully illustrated like Reggie's).  Miss Betty could not stand the word draperies, and I must admit, it makes me cringe as well.  She also looked askance when people used the word couch (rather than sofa) and she absolutely hated the word den.  "Put some books in it and call it a library!" were her words of wisdom... I am not sure where that particular post is, but for more on Miss Betty, click here.  She also believed in maids wearing uniforms and other rules that I have broken over and over again.  Reggie also writes on these things, and I look forward to finding out what he thinks!

Cheers,
Liz

A Christmas Poem

Click here for info about this Christmas ornament

Christmas Poem

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF A FAR DISTANT LAND.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I WEPT FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,!
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

Christmas Special

Hello, All!  Just wanted to pop in and wish you the happiest of holidays!  I have a little gift for those of you who are Downton Abbey fans, too!!

Photo courtesy The Daily Mail online
If you like this wonderful program from the UK and don't want to wait for Masterpiece Theatre to show Season 2....Do like I do and watch all the episodes from Season 1 and 2 on www.viptv.net.  I love this website, because it allows me to keep up with many of my UK favorites without having to wait almost a year for them to get to American TV. (*12/27 UPDATE: For some reason, viptv.net doesn't have the Downton Abbey Christmas special up yet.  If you have seen Season 2 and want to see it.....and it is FABULOUS....You may view it on YouTube here.)

Christmas night is the Downton Abbey Christmas special episode.  WARNING!  This Daily Mail article (click here) contains some spoilers...so if   you haven't seen Season 2 yet, you might not want to read it.  (I adore Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess and I hear she has some terrific "put downs" for the Christmas special!!)

Taking a brief blogging holiday, but will see you on the 27th, if not before!

This video also contains spoilers....

Cheers!

Thursday Thoughts: More Vintage

Since I seem to be reminiscing this week.....

Preppy Christmas Card 1959!

I still have the little horse ("Wonder") and the label and a little piece of the fabric from the jacket. (It was a favorite, but finally wore out...a precious little "Merry Mite" from Bergdorf Goodman.  Miss Betty used to fly to New York from Virginia to get her hair done when I was little.....Which is a story of its own!....and she got me the cutest clothes from Bergdorf's!!)

Tuesday Thoughts: December Dates

December is a wonderful month....but it holds two very sad dates for me, December 10th and 19th...the days on which my parents died.  Miss Betty went to heaven on December 10th (2008), just two days short of her 85th birthday, which was yesterday.  My Dad departed December 19th (1998), just days short of his 85th birthday on January 1st.

Many people focus on death dates, but I don't....I like birthdays as remembrances much better.  Although it is sad to lose a parent at Christmas time, I am so thankful that their birthdays are also during the holiday season.  Makes for such happy memories!

Here's to you, Mom and Dad!  Love you and miss you....

Monday Musings: I Believe

I did then.  I do now.
Most importantly, I believe in the baby whose birth we celebrate.  How blessed we are!!

Thursday Thoughts: Where Is It Safe These Days?

As a parent of a Virginia college-age student, today's shootings at Virginia Tech have made me think of little else.  So much tragedy there...and Older Daughter, who is at a smaller university, has many friends on campus at Tech.  It's worrisome.

Peace on earth.  We need it so badly.

More tomorrow....on a lighter note, I hope!

Tuesday Tips: More Shopping Info

Every time I think I have time to blog....well, you know the answer.....projects pile up and I am away.
I will try to do better...although this week is looking a little daunting!

More shopping to do?  I am almost finished....Can't believe it!  Now I am just enjoying looking at the emails that are coming in with helpful suggestions.

I want one of these digital frames from Kodak! I think it would look great on my desk in the office. Click here for more info...
