Friday: A Day Off

Oooh!  It's been a busy week.  Decided to run by CVS and get my flu shot yesterday while Younger Daughter was at dance, and today my arm hurt a little (typical for me), so I decided to use it as an excuse to relax and catch up on some DVR recordings.

I am completely and totally obsessed with Antenna TV.  It's like TCM for television.  Although it's programmed for early morning hours, one of my favorite shows is recorded every night and I have so enjoyed seeing episodes I have never seen before.  Starring one of my favorite of the most brilliant women to ever be on a stage or on celluloid....Shirley Booth..... the show is, of course, Hazel.  The Antenna TV schedule has just rolled back around to the very first season (shot in black and white) and those episodes are priceless!  (If you need to catch up, they are also available on Netflix.)

This intro is from a later season, but I just love it.....Always wanted a miniature car when I was little!

Excuse me, please, but I need to get back to my friend, Hazel! Have a great weekend!

Just found two little "holiday" segments on YouTube that will give you a preview:
(For those of you who know me...Yes!....I am just like Mrs. Johnson in the first episode. And all
three segments are on YouTube if you want to watch either episode in its entirety.)

Tartan Tuesday

I love tartans! I am descended from the Wemyss family in Scotland (Wemyss Castle is right across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh) and Younger Daughter is a competitive Scottish Highland Dancer. This is the start of the busy fall season for her, so this weekend we will be heading to Williamsburg for their festival.

Read this wonderful article on tartans that is from a past edition of the New York Social Diary.

Monday At The Movies

It is so frustrating to me that one of my favorite films is not on DVD...nor is it shown on television/cable very often.  It could definitely fit in the "preppy" category....I want to grow up to be just like Ethel Barrymore's character.  When I saw her wearing her pearls with her peignoir, I knew she was my kind of woman!

If you ever get the chance to see Loretta Young in The Farmer's Daughter, don't miss it!

Labor Day And Labels

When I started this blog, I was pretty good about using the Labels feature for people could go in and read what they wanted to.  I got very lazy very quickly, however, and have really neglected that.  Now even I can't find things I need to refer to......

So, on this Labor Day, I have decided to pull that feature back up, and slowly but surely, go through old posts and label them.  It will take me quite awhile I am afraid, but keep checking back.... and I promise from this day on out, I will be more organized....especially with this blog!

Spending today organizing things in the house, too....oh so slowly (and sadly) putting away the summer things.  I really don't want to let go of summer this year.  It has been the most amazing summer ever! Oh, well....I guess it's up to me to make the fall just as good! (And the only way to do that is to get organized.  So, I will be checking in at Clutter Diet today to get some tips on my office.  This image from Google Images/The Vanilla Joy blog is not too much of an exaggeration in my case.  If I get brave enough, I will photograph a "Before and After!"

Cheers and Happy Labor Day!

Saturday Special Edition: Back To School Bags

It's Back To School time!  Finally.....Here in Richmond, it was delayed for many schools because of the earthquake and Hurricane Irene.  But, we're headed back next week....and we are going in style.  (I am not personally headed back, but I always think of September as the start of a new year for me as well....and shop for myself accordingly.)

This is the PERFECT time of year to add some fun new items to your life!  Just received an amazing lunch tote in the mail....for Younger Daughter, who is obsessed with all things zebra.  Made by Simply Bags (, it is well constructed, made of lovely material and is just darn cute!  Of course, it had to be monogrammed.....and even that came out really well....Look!

I can't wait to order up is their adorable bag for dogs.  Poor little Lucy has had to make do with an old LL Bean tote...and it doesn't even have her name on it!  Now when she goes to her little "resort" when we leave town, she can travel in style!!

There are tons of adorable bags....Click on their site and look around....

I love, love, LOVE this teacher's bag.  Wouldn't that be a great gift from the class, stuffed with goodies (Back to School, Christmas, End of the Year)?

Speaking of school.....What about college?  Every student needs a cute laundry bag....or a tote bag for carrying the essentials to a football game/tailgate party!  (I hated to pick just one school, so I chose Chapel Hill in honor of my dad.  Duke fans, my apologies...)  They also have adorable bags that are for have to check those out on their site!!'s the treat I mentioned yesterday......The owner of Simply Bags has offered readers of The Classic Preppy a special discount through the month of September.  10% off just by using the coupon code preppy.  So, check it out....I think I am going to do a little Christmas shopping myself!

Thursday Thoughts: Planning In The Dark

It ain't easy livin' without power....but it certainly does make me appreciate it.  I have taken it for "granted" before.   I think, too, that I have really taken my good health for granted for many, many years.  Going through the stressful times of the days/months/years before my mother ("Miss Betty") died, made for some less than desirable eating choices.

Around the time of the Royal Wedding, I saw a tweet from India Hicks, about giving up diet soda.  I was doing the same and followed her hashtag #fatsickandnearlydead to the website  Bought the movie and watched it and it changed my life!  So much so, that I am bringing Joe Cross and his film to Richmond on September 15th.  If you are in the Richmond area, or know anyone in Central Virginia, this is a must-attend event!  For more, just click on!
