Wednesday Wishes: A Powerful Day

Well....to be quite honest, it was a day lacking in power for the most part.  We are still without, but are patiently waiting, thankful to have a generator that does the basics (including TV/cable/internet)!

I decided that I needed to get out today...and because I am not at my "best" (no hairdryer), I thought a darkened movie theatre might be just the ticket! (Pardon the pun.)

The trailer for The Debt has fascinated me for quite awhile now, and luckily today was opening day.  So there I was, in the audience for the first showing.

I. Was. Blown. Away.

Not sure what else to say, except that it (from the first five minutes on) is a VERY intense movie.  VERY.  Let me repeat.  VERY INTENSE.  But...it is one of the smartest, most well-crafted films I have seen in a VERY long time as well.  Go....you won't regret it.  Just plan to have some quiet time afterwards to "catch your breath."  I felt like I could hardly breathe as I left the theatre.....but I am so glad that's how I chose to spend today.

PS.  I didn't realize until just a moment ago that the actress who played Celia Foote in The Help, is also the actress that plays the lead (young Helen Mirren) in The Debt.  Remember her....Jessica Chastain......I think we will be seeing a lot more of this amazingly talented young woman in the future!!

Tuesday Tips: Shopping and Saving

Dear Husband has our generator going, so we have the basics....refrigerator/freezer, bedroom lights and television (have to have Turner Classic Movies....it's Howard Keel Day today!), and computer/internet.  So, although I can't do any indoor household chores (for the most part), I can do online shopping!

So...I need to tell you about one of the best finds online....CouponChief.com.

Yes, preppies do use coupons!  No, we don't tend to hoard or use coupons for things we don't need/use, but we do like to save money when and where we can.  A penny saved is a penny earned!!

I very rarely buy anything online without doing a coupon search through Google....and often find something that gives me 10-20% off or free shipping.  CouponChief.com is a wonderful go-to site...and if you find a good deal, you can share it with other coupon hunters by uploading it! Check out this video to learn more...

Check them out on Facebook, visit their website and/or follow them on Twitter.  (Love their Twitter feed...Keeps me really up to date!)

Happy Shopping!!

Cheers!

Monday Madness: Earthquakes and Hurricanes and Aftershocks..Oh, My!

It was quite a week around here! Started with the 5.8 earthquake, followed by aftershocks and finished up with a tropical storm/hurricane. We had some damage, including a tree down in the backyard, but are grateful to be in one piece. Others did not fare as well. Being without power is an inconvenience, not a tragedy....and LIFE GOES ON! (The picture above is the tree that fell across the road from our neighbor's.)

Got a fun email in the midst of all of this, from a great company called SimplyBags.com. Just got finished ordering a fun monogrammed lunch bag for Younger Daughter, and am thinking about going back over to their website in a minute and looking for a little treat for Yours Truly!

You can visit them at www.simply-bags.com and get to know more about them from their video!

Friday Find: Busy, Busy

One 5.8 earthquake. Check. Five good size aftershocks. Check. Hurricane on the way. Check. Made sure to go to salon to have hair done to look good for whatever comes our way. Check.

Now I better finish the real hurricane preparations! Just wanted to point you once more to the New York Social Diary. They have done a piece that recaps all the magnificent pictures I have been telling you about over the past few months!

Check it out here.....NYSD.com

Tuesday Tidings: Mother Nature, Give Us A Break

Sitting at lunch with Younger Daughter and a friend today.  Floor starts vibrating, table starts shaking, lights start falling from ceiling.

I. Do. Not. Like. Earthquakes.

Came home to prepare for possible hurricane backlash this weekend.  Unload everything from the grocery store, have dinner....and then.....

Aftershock.

A rather large one.

Repeat, I do not like this.

Mother Nature, cut it out!!!

Monday At The Movies

A new feature on The Classic Preppy.... Scenes from some of my favorite movies.

This is a childhood favorite...used to be shown all the time, but I haven't seen it in years, and it's not out on DVD, etc.  A shame....

Oh, and James MacArthur plays a preppy in this one!

Ladies and gentlemen, The Truth About Spring....

Friday Find: TCM Rocks My World

Old movies have always been my thing.  I am a sort of "classic cinema guru" to my friends and family, too....and I get all kinds of questions.  Like this:

"What else has he been in?....You know, the little guy at the end of the bar there."

I don't mind a bit.  It's my thing.

Nerd alert!  I subscribe to Now Playing, the small magazine from Turner Classic Movies.  Again... it's my thing!  I wanted to let you know that today was going to be a special one.  It's Debbie Reynolds Day on TCM!

Ms. Reynolds has always been a favorite, and there are so many good things on today....Singin' In the Rain, The Singing Nun, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Tammy....

I am posting this at midnight, to give you as much of a head's up as possible.  Set your DVR now and have a great weekend!

Cheers,
Liz

Wednesday Wishes: To Be In LA

Another place I miss terribly is California.  Not so much because it's a beautiful state, but because I have very dear friends and family who live there.  I miss them.

One of those dear people is Judith Chapman.  Long time readers of The Classic Preppy know that Judith's mother and Miss Betty were life long (since age 3) best friends...and Judith is like a sister to me.  She is doing her one woman show Vivien this month in LA.  If you are in the area, you must go see it.  She is a brilliant actress.  I am afraid I am going to have to wait until she brings it to the east coast...but I can't wait to see it!

Tuesday Thoughts

Just as things are rolling along with all my projects (promise to write more soon about all that), I get this picture via Facebook.

The caption read, "I'm holding four tables.  Any takers?"

I am so homesick now...and so "depressed."  LOL....... But seriously, if any of you are in Palm Beach County, Florida....Go to the Latitudes Ocean Grill in Highland Beach.  Best view (you are on the beach) and best food in the area. (There is indoor and outdoor seating, so you can have the view with air conditioning as well.)

Away For A Bit...

I have had some things come up....all good and rather exciting things....and I need to be away for a few days to work on those projects. I will be back next week with a rundown of what I am doing.... More soon!

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
Liz

Friday Find: Facebook Crack

Today I find I am spending way too much time, having far too much fun on Facebook.....chatting in that newly formed group of people who grew up in Delray Beach, Florida when I did. It's addictive.

Step away from the computer.  Put the mouse down and step away.....No.... no.....Don't do it.  Stop!  Now!!!

Or perhaps I need a 12 step program....

Hi!  My name is Liz and I am a Facebook Group addict.

Oops!  There's another notification.  Bye!

Thoughtful Thursday: Trip Down Memory Lane

For those of you a certain age, check out what is available on Facebook as far as groups of people around the same age, who grew up in the same town. They are springing up all over the place and are so much fun! A friend of mine in South Carolina is in one that has over 1200 people...and someone I know from my hometown (Delray Beach, Florida) just started one on Tuesday.... and it is already over 150 members strong! It has brought back such sweet memories!

I just posted the picture above on the group today, as a few of us were in the same kindergarten class. Love how the children are dressed! So different than what you see today....Can you figure out which one I am?  I have majorly preppy (think "English sandal") shoes on!

In Delray Beach, the children's shop was Happy Daze.  I remember it only slightly, because Miss Betty's favorite children's shop in Delray Beach was Ellen Ruth's, which was still in existence when Older Daughter was a baby.  Miss Betty's absolute favorite, though,  was the Lullabye Shop in Palm Beach.  The number of hours I spent in that store and the Prep Shop next door, where she got my brother's clothes....countless.  However, if we "behaved" (which was very big with Miss Betty), we were rewarded with a trip to the Royal Poinciana Plaza to have lunch at Schrafft's and stop in FAO Schwarz to "look around."

(Picture of the Lullaby Shop from the Florida archives, and featured in Historic Photos of Palm Beach County.)

If you are too young to remember Schrafft's (in New York and Palm Beach), then check out the book, When Everybody Ate At Schrafft's.  You can get it on Amazon (even for your Kindle!).

The picture I posted last week that was a special memory for me, was a picture of one of the little seats in the interior courtyard at the Royal Poinciana Plaza.  There are debates on whether or not this and the Royal Poinciana Playhouse are viable structures to preserve/"save."  I think they are.  It may be more sentiment than architectural significance....but they are treasures beyond compare in the Classic Preppy's estimation!

The Royal Poinciana Plaza is also (very sadly) remembered for being the location of Au Bar, the site of the Ted Kennedy/William Kennedy Smith scandal of 1991.  I don't think it really recovered after that....but I always have hope for the future!  If you are in Palm Beach, pop over there to Too-Jay's Deli for lunch or an early dinner...and have a look around.

Woeful Wednesday: Homesick

I want to go back to Florida.  Loved, loved, LOVED the house we stayed in.  Miss Betty loved it when it was being built...with its Charleston side entrance!  I liked it so much, I did a video of it for the owner, and she is going to be using it on her website.

Monday Madness

Back in Virginia and planning lots of posts on the adventures of the past two weeks.  Best. vacation. ever.

In the meantime....although I am one of those people who holds on to summer with everything she has, I do realize we are now in August and looking at fall/Back to School on the horizon.  For those of you already planning for those days, here's a great new video from Brooks Brothers!
