Friday Find: Beating The Winter Blues

Someone tweeted the question "How do you get over winter?"  My cure is simple.....wear sunscreen.  Anything that smells like the sunscreen you wear on the beach in summer will do.  That smell evokes a great sense memory....and if you put on a little beach music (which is especially evocative for us Southerners), the cure is complete!

How do YOU beat the wintertime blues???

Thursday Thoughts: Remembering Jack

I was devastated to learn of my friend Jack LaLanne's death this past weekend.   I only met Jack once in person, and then had several opportunities to speak to Jack and Elaine over the phone, including an interview on cooking a "healthy turkey" for Thanksgiving.

If you haven't visited Jack's website, you may do so by clicking here.  You can watch some of his old tv shows online, or order them as DVD's.  I have them all and they are great fun to work out with!  (When he was on tv and I was a little girl, I used to try working out with him then, too!!)

God bless you, Jack.....I know heaven is blessed by your presence!

Love,
Liz

Wonderful Wednesday: The Snow Must Go!

Should have written something more fascinating for today....but will have to save that for tomorrow, when I write about my friend, Jack LaLanne, who passed away this past weekend.

Today is almost done, and tomorrow will be here soon....Please....when I wake up, let the snow be gone and school be on! Please!!!! LOL

Tuesday Theme: Feelin' Good!

Must admit......This week is living up to my "theme song."  I am feelin' good......or at least feeling MUCH better.  Promise not to harp on this anymore, but if you didn't get a flu shot this year, you might want to get one now.  Wish I had!!

Feelin' good is also accomplished by continuing to clean and declutter.  I am making some considerable progress, and I have tossed/given away a lot.....and don't miss it one little bit.  I don't know about you, but the master bedroom of our house seems to be the repository for things that no one knows what to do with.  Not good!  It hasn't looked really decluttered in years, so it was top of my priority list.  We are almost there.....and I cannot believe how much better my husband and I sleep at night, knowing that we are not surrounded by so much stuff.

As a reward for this clean-up, we are treating ourselves to a new mattress.....a Sleep Number bed.  I like a very firm mattress and DH likes more give.....so this should make everyone happy!  It's being delivered today.....and I am not ashamed for the delivery men to bring it into the room.....it looks so good!  Yay!!!!!

Miss Betty Monday

Miss Betty had very high standards.  She was not particularly impressed by celebrity (although she loved Rod Stewart!), and she had many, many interesting stories of encounters with notable people throughout the years.

One of her favorite people was a gentleman who was a lifelong friend of her Irish friend Linda. (I will not put Linda's last name in for privacy's sake.)  Linda's good friend is named Desmond Guinness, and Miss Betty was so excited to meet him and get to know him, because of her love of historic preservation and stately houses and the amazing things he has accomplished in that area.

I came across this article about Mr. Guinness and his work in the NY Times a couple of years ago, and wanted to share it with you.  Hope you will enjoy it as much as Miss Betty enjoyed getting to meet "Des" himself!

Beginning Again

I'm back.  Up to about half speed....and hope in another week to be completely back to normal.  For anyone out there (like me), who did NOT get his or her flu shot this year......RUN!!!!!....Go get one now.  You do not want this stuff!!!!

Isn't this logo awesome?  Saw it online and use it as my icon on the Weight Watchers website.  It certainly applies to my journey.....and I am still on track with my New Year's resolutions.  I should be super stressed right now, because I am going to have to replace the hard drive on my relatively new computer, but I am taking it in stride.....

It's going to be a super busy week, so tomorrow I am going to write five posts that will then post automatically, Monday through Friday of next week.  I am taking control of this situation......and, note to Dell Customer Service.......You were completely incompetent, useless and rude yesterday.  Although it has many fine features, I regret having purchased this Studio 17 and its extended warranty.  It's Apple for the Classic Preppy after this!  I love my Ipad!!!!!!

Friday Find: Busy Weekend Ahead

I find that I have a very busy weekend ahead.....Wish I could find a cleaning/organizing crew to come in here and get all the work done!!  LOL

Older Daughter returned from a college trip to Ireland last night.....with great stories and tons of laundry.
The picture below is one of many that she took...and I must say that Ireland is one of the prettiest places on earth, in my opinion.....

Also hosting a brunch for a dear friend who is moving next week.  I am just providing the house and "set-up"....all kinds of lovely ladies are bringing all kinds of terrific food.  Just praying that whatever snow is on the horizon heads elsewhere.  The person we are honoring is one of the most amazing women I have ever known.  More than 70 of us are gathering to say "good-bye"......but I think just as many are planning a group trip to see her in her new location!  Fun, fun, fun!!...

Would love to stay and chat more, but duty calls....

Have a great weekend!!

Cheers,
Liz

Tiffany & Co. Thursday

I think for the next few months I will devote Thursdays to Tiffany & Co....Its history, its jewelry and its people.  I have so many fond memories of my time at Tiffany's....and many funny stories to go along with those memories.

Today, I will start out simply.  The other day, I received a tweet that asked, "What's your favorite Tiffany item?"

It's hard to pick out just one, but this one has a very special place in my heart...the Maltese Cross by Jean Schlumberger.
Now, if I were to choose a piece to aspire to, it would also be a piece from Mr. Schlumberger's collection.  (I guess it's obvious that he is my favorite TCO designer!)  I think I would choose one of his necklaces!  This is my favorite....

More to come....

Cheers!

Wonderful Wednesday: I'm Flying!

Fair warning....this has nothing to do with being preppy.  It's almost "anti-preppy" as preps usually don't do their own cleaning or hate to clean if they have to........but today is Organizing Day for yours truly.  (The first of many!!!)

Besides some general cleaning in the house, the mission for today is to tackle my home office.....and it needs a lot of help.  Fortunately, years ago I found a wonderful website that helped me organize my organizing, and I have found her advice over the years to be priceless.  Who is this wonderful person?..........Why it's Marla Cilley....The Fly Lady!  (I guess you can say she is preppy in a way....She got her nickname because she loves to fly fish, which I have always found to be a very Southern Preppy activity!)

Here's Marla's advice for a bright beginning to a great New Year!

Tuesday Theme (Song) : Part 2

This post is dedicated to my friend, Kathie and her fantastic blog, The Hillbilly Debutante.  Kathie is feeling good these days....and she is ahead of schedule for 2011, which makes me completely jealous!

Last Tuesday I wrote about my 2011 "theme song"....an all time favorite, reinterpreted and recorded by one of my all time favorite artists, the amazing Jennifer Hudson.

In case you missed Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve special.....Here is Jennifer, introducing her new song (and her fabulous new self)!  As a Lifetime Weight Watchers member myself (lapsed, but back on plan), I am proud to be part of her group!   Take a couple of minutes to watch this video...She is AMAZING!

Miss Betty Monday: The Peak Of Chic

Miss Betty loved all the decorative arts.  She knew more about antiquefurniture than anyone I have ever known, then or now.....and was knowledgeable about china, crystal, and silver, too.  If Miss Betty were still here and if she ever used a computer (she "didn't believe in them"), I think she would have loved reading one of my favorite blogs, The Peak of Chic.  I don't know its creator, Jennifer Boles, but from reading her blog, I know we have some things in common.  She lives in Atlanta (where I lived for 9 years), she worked for Tiffany & Co., and she loves vintage books and magazines filled with amazing pictures of amazing rooms, table settings, etc.

The other day, Jennifer featured a layout from the original Tiffany Table Settings book.  I, too, have this book, because it was one of the hundreds of books of that genre from Miss Betty's library......but I didn't remember seeing that particular page.

The picture is one of the few color shots in the book, and is of a table on Princess Gourielli's (Helena Rubenstein) terrace.  What caught my eye in the picture was the china she used.  I thought it looked familiar, and sure enough, upon closer inspection, realized that it was Miss Betty's Harebell Turquoise by Coalport!  Harebell is a very unique pattern, and I don't think many people know about it, or own it......but I love it.   Until a couple of years before she died, she was still asking for pieces of it for Christmas or birthday....and thanks to Replacements Ltd. (see my post from last spring ), we could make her wishes come true.  I often wondered if Miss Betty chose it as one of her two fine china patterns, because she knew she was going to live at the beach.  The colors are perfect....so light and airy.

I don't use Harebell very often.....but my goal is to add a teapot and coffee pot to my Harebell collection and use it for teas and brunches.  Then one day it will go to one of my daughters or one of my nieces....and Miss Betty and her favorite china will live on!  (I would bet my bottom dollar that when Miss Betty got her Tiffany Table Settings book all those years ago, she noticed that she and Princess Gourielli both had excellent taste!!)

Happy New Year!!

Today is one of my favorite days of the year....and not because it's New Year's.  January 1st is (was) my dear daddy's birthday.  My dear dad went to heaven in 1998, but if he were here today, we would be celebrating his 97th birthday with a piece of his favorite cake....coconut!!

My dad was the coolest guy ever!!  He was always my hero, and as I grew up, I admired him more and more, the more I learned about him.  After college (UNC Chapel Hill), when his father passed away, he was called (at only 22) to run the family mill/cotton business in North Carolina.  Although it wasn't his calling he did so dutifully, until he finally let the family know what he really wanted to do was fly.  In the 1930's that was very unusual......but fly he did, and was a senior pilot for United Airlines for many, many years.  We traveled all over and had the most wonderful group of friends through the airlines, many of whom had a similar story to my dads.  These were the young men who studied business, architecture, law, etc.....but whose hearts were in the sky.  All of them stepped into the unknown all those decades ago, and lived wonderful lives because of the choice to follow their passion.  They were an incredible group.....and I will write more about them soon, as they figure into many of my "Miss Betty stories."  (Miss Betty was 34 and my dad was 44 when they were married....first and only marriage for each.  Both had lived very interesting and busy lives until then.....They were a little ahead of their time!)

Happy Birthday, Daddy!  I will love you always.......Your "Libbus"
