Thursday Thoughts: Manners And More

Happy Birthday, Emily Post!  You have made such a difference in the lives of so many.  Long may you (and your books) reign!!!

The reason I started The Classic Preppy was to blog/write about etiquette and "marvelous manners" for children.  Some time ago, a friend and I had developed the Practice Makes Perfect Placemat and I had written a workbook for the children's classes I taught....I thought it might be fun to share those things online, and thus, The Classic Preppy!  Well, I got so much great response to my introductory articles, Miss Betty stories and other things, I still haven't gotten around to the original plan...but that's coming soon.

In the meantime, I want to point you to a darling Facebook page that's all about "marvelous manners".....The Albuquerque Cotillion.  You can find it here:  Check it out!

Also, check out this great modern-day article on Tiffany's Table Manners for Teenagers.  That is the book on which my etiquette course for Tiffany and Co. was based!

Wednesday Wonders (Warning: Non-Prep Content)

In memory of my dear grandmother, who died at 101. Only in her last year or two of life was she like this...a state kicked off by a mini-stroke. She drove until she was about 97! (Her favorite songs at the end were Christmas carols!!)

Tuesday Thoughts: The Great Gatsby

It's a classic. One of "the" preppy classics....and yet the film version is being remade once again, this time by Baz Luhrman. Hmmm....Don't know quite how I feel about that. Pretty good cast, I suppose, but the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow may be hard to top. (I didn't think the 2000 version was very good....but I haven't seen the silent version. Who knows? That's the closest one to the actual time period! Might be pretty good!!! Enjoy....

Monday Musings: I Didn't Know!

About a week and a half ago I had dinner with some of the most interesting people! Two of the people at my table were talking about their interest/participation in "beagling."

I must admit....I had never heard anything about this before. I am familiar with beagles and what they do...and am familiar with "the hunt" and all that entails....but I had no idea there was a sport that involved taking these dogs out on their own! Very preppy and very colorful! (Don't worry about the actual "hunt" part, either, as you watch the video below...the rabbit scampered away quickly and safely!!)

Have YOU ever heard of beagling? I am beginning to think there is a lot I am missing!!!

One Of Those Weeks

Busy, busy, busy, busy.....and must confess that I have not even had a chance to think about blogging.

Dear Readers, I am so very, very sorry....but I promise to make it up to you next week!

Check back for all kinds of posts: funny, preppy, vintage, you name it!  We'll have fun during the last week of October!  Promise!!!

I would write more today, but I have been gone so much, I have to concentrate on cleaning.  I am afraid my housekeeper is going to quit!!

Tuesday Tidings: Giggles

Two funny things arrived in my inbox this morning!  First, this simple little ad from Brooks Brothers which made me want to break out my tap shoes.

Second, this video, sent to me by a much younger friend, who won't have this problem for years.  I, however, can really identify.  Throw a nap into the mix and you have one of my better days (without the English accent of course!)....

Have a great day! Liz

Monday Madness: Getting Back To Business

Whew!  What a great week...but a busy week....

Had a marvelous time in New Jersey in beautiful Basking Ridge.  Also got to spend time all around Morris County and had a particularly lovely "closing dinner" at the beautiful Short Hills Country Club.

I am still playing catch-up with everything, so this post won't be long...but I thought I would share with you this picture of the beautiful flowers on the table that last evening.  I was fortunate enough to be sitting with the President of our group and our special guest speaker, who was from Winterthur, one of my favorite places!

More soon!!

Tuesday Thoughts: Travel

Getting ready to do some more traveling next week....and am so looking forward to it.  Staying in a hotel that is supposed to be absolutely charming, located in a beautiful area I have never been to before.  Will let you know more "from the road!"

In the meantime, I wanted to recommend two places to you that I have heard AMAZING things about, but have not yet experienced for myself (overnight), since one is where I live and another is in my hometown.  Both are bed and breakfast establishments....those lovely private places, that allow you to feel like you are staying "at home" and are not out in the public eye.

Check out their websites....EVERYTHING is done perfectly in these two places....from the outside appearance of the buildings, the discreet signage (you want to blend in to the neighborhood!) to the lavish interiors and the amazing breakfasts....I think you will find Maury Place (Richmond) and the Historic Hartman House (Delray Beach) two places to put on your "Must See" list!

Monday At The Museum

Had a wonderful day in Georgetown (Washington), DC today..... Was there for a meeting at Dumbarton House Museum.  It's definitely a place you want to put on your list when you are in our nation's capital.

Check it out online, too! Dumbarton House Museum
