The more things change, the more they stay the same! It's true in life and it's true for Tiffany & Co. Some people are a bit dumbstruck by all the new "merchandise" at Tiffany's.....handbags, eyeglasses, etc.
It seems that Tiffany's is branching out way beyond what they have done before. Wrong!!! Tiffany's past is full of interesting merchandise. When the company opened its doors on Lower Broadway in Manhattan, they carried "bric-brac, Chinese goods, papier mache articles from Japan, terra-cotta ware, umbrellas, walking sticks...., desks, dressing cases, and - most of all- stationery." (The Tiffany Touch) It wasn't long before the company became noted for its beautiful jewelry and its more unusual gifts and corporate trophies.
You are all probably very well aware of the Tiffany & Co. Super Bowl trophy.....but did you know they did lots of other trophies, too..
.including one for the NBA?
And the list goes on and on and on.....
One of my all time favorite Tiffany "trophies" was the piece designed to honor William Cullen Bryant, the US Poet Laureate. It is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and they have an amazing webpage dedicated to this piece, letting you see the detail in extraordinary close-up photography!
Join me tomorrow when we talk more about Tiffany & Co, the elegance of great design and......
an elegant and beautiful piece (not Tiffany's) that has been designed to commemorate the Royal Wedding!
It's exquisite, elegant and afforable!
See you tomorrow!!
